She will walk. The Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, assures on X (formerly Twitter) that she will participate in the march against anti-Semitism this Sunday afternoon in Paris, because “this fight is vital for our national cohesion”.

In the same message, she denounces “postures (which) have no place in this serious moment”. This remark targets both La France Insoumise, whose “absence speaks for itself” and the National Rally, whose “presence fools no one”, clarified the Prime Minister.

The great civic march against anti-Semitism this Sunday is organized at the call of the presidents of the National Assembly and the Senate, Yaël Braun-Pivet and Gérard Larcher. It is intended to be a response to the explosion in the number of hostile acts against Jews since the Hamas massacres in Israel on October 7 and the military response that followed. Rallies and parades are also planned in the provinces, notably at the call of the Association of Mayors of France.

Borne, Hollande and Sarkozy in the lead

But the participation of the RN raises eyebrows, given – in particular – the anti-Semitic past of the party co-founded by Jean-Marie Le Pen. It is “a political party created by the heirs of Vichy”, it is “not unity but indecency”, for example judged the government spokesperson, Olivier Véran, to Le Parisien. On the other side of the political spectrum, LFI, accused of ambiguities on anti-Semitism, is boycotting the demonstration precisely because of the presence of the National Rally, even if the rebels should line up behind other initiatives.

In Paris, the leading square will bring together personalities “embodying” the Republic, but “no party leaders”, with in the front row Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, whose Jewish father was deported, ex-presidents François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy and former heads of government. Emmanuel Macron ultimately decided not to go to the march, while ensuring that he would be there “in his heart and in his thoughts”.
