The police custody of Youssouf Traoré, brother of Adama and Assa, has been lifted, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Sunday, specifying however that “the investigation is continuing”. He left the hospital, and joined a rally in front of a police station for another man arrested. His lawyer, Me Yassine Bouzrou, announced that he had filed a complaint for willful violence.

Youssouf Traoré was injured in one eye during his arrest, and felt unwell in the premises of the police station, which led to his transfer to hospital, according to a police source. He appears, his face disfigured, in a video broadcast on Sunday by the collective “The truth for Adama”. ” Thank you all for your support. As you can see, I just got out. (…) We don’t let go for the others who have been injured and who are still in police custody, ”he assures us facing the camera.

He suffered from a broken nose, head trauma with eye contusion, thoracic, abdominal and lumbar contusions, the group said in a press release.

A particularly muscular arrest

The 29-year-old man was placed in police custody for violence against a person responsible for public authority and rebellion, on the sidelines of a rally in Place de la République in Paris, in memory of his brother, Adama Traoré, who died in 2016 in Persan (Val-d’Oise) after his arrest by the gendarmes. His police custody, lifted because of his hospitalization, could then resume.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Youssouf Traoré was accused of having “dealed a blow” to a police commissioner at the start of the rally, Place de la République. According to the police version, he was recognized later in the demonstration, and arrested for these facts.

The arrest, muscular and filmed – we see him resisting then being tackled and held face to the ground by several police officers – provoked convictions from several left-wing elected officials on social networks.

A second man, also arrested during this controversial rally, was released from police custody late Sunday afternoon, the Adama Committee announced to AFP. He was summoned at a later date before the prosecutor’s delegate for a probationary criminal warning, the Paris prosecutor’s office said in the evening. The Adama committee had called for “massive” mobilization to obtain his release on Sunday at 2 p.m. in front of the police station in the 1st arrondissement of Paris.

Shortly before 3 p.m., around fifty people, including LFI deputies Éric Coquerel, Jérôme Legavre and Thomas Portes, were present in front of the police station protected by eight police officers, AFP noted. The demonstration ended peacefully shortly before 5 p.m.

At the same time, legal proceedings for “organizing an undeclared demonstration” have been opened against Assa Traoré, announced the police headquarters, which describes her as “the organizer” of the event. At least 2,000 people gathered calmly in Paris in memory of Adama Traoré, despite the ban from the police headquarters, which feared excesses in connection with the death of Nahel, at the end of June in Nanterre.
