This is an increase of 5.5% for passengers, 17% for MREs and 9.5% for vehicles compared to the same period in 2023, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics said in a statement on Monday.
With the aim of continuously improving the maritime component of Operation Marhaba, the ministry has mobilized 29 ships this year, capable of making 535 weekly trips, with a weekly transport capacity of around 500,000 and 130,000 cars, the press release emphasizes.
The same source said that the ministry carried out a technical inspection of all these ships before the start of the operation to ensure their compliance with international safety standards, adding that it also carried out regular checks on the quality of the services offered on board the ships mobilized as part of the “Marhaba 2024” operation.
Regarding the distribution of traffic by port, Tanger Med took the lion’s share with a total of 1.62 million passengers and 427,000 cars in transit (57% of total traffic), followed by the ports of Tangier Ville (23% of total traffic), Nador (19% of total traffic) and Al Hoceima (1% of total traffic).
The peaks of the incoming flow to the Kingdom were recorded on August 3 and 4, with around 80 thousand passengers and 20 thousand cars.
For the exit phase, the last ten days of August saw a great influx, with the passage of around 460,000 passengers and 103,000 cars from Morocco to the other side of the Mediterranean.
According to the ministry, the adoption of advance booking of tickets, at a fixed date and time, has played a key role in smoothing out flows, particularly on the busy maritime routes “Tanger Med – Algeciras” and “Tanger Ville – Tarifa”.
