(ANSA) – TURIN, APRIL 19 – At the Maria Pia Hospital in Turin, for the first time in the world, the bladder was removed on a sixty-year-old patient with only one kidney, using the Hugo Ras robotic system. The operation was successfully performed by Giovanni Muto, director of the hospital’s urology department and his team composed of Alberto Ragusa and his collaborators, Paolo Caccia and Alessandro Rocca. “The operation – explains Muto himself – was unique in its kind, as it had never been performed with this particular type of robot, not only due to the intrinsic technical complexity of radical cystectomy in a female patient, but also due to the peculiar presence of only one kidney”.
“Infiltrating bladder cancer has always represented an imposing challenge for the surgeon and the patient – comments Muto -. If in the past traditional surgery involved a significant midline abdominal incision, both to perform the operation and to remove the cancer and compromised tissues, thanks to the help of the robotic system the entire procedure is now possible through four holes of one centimeter each. This is because the surgical indication for the infiltrating tumor of the bladder is the removal of a bulky surgical specimen from the bladder, uterus, ovaries and appendages, in this case it was extracted through the vagina, ensuring the patient recovers more quickly and returns to daily life while minimizing discomfort.”
After approximately five days of post-operative hospital stay, the patient returned to her home in good general health. (HANDLE).
