Mariah Carey mourns the loss of her mother and sister.

The 55-year-old singer announced on Monday that her mother Patricia passed away at the age of 87 over the weekend, on the same day her sister Alison, 63, also died.

She told People: “I am heartbroken to have lost my mother last weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life the same day. I feel blessed to have spent last week with my mother before she passed. I appreciate the love and support from everyone, as well as the respect for my privacy during this difficult time.”

The “Always Be My Baby” singer did not reveal further details about the events that led to these deaths.

Patricia – who divorced the late Alfred Roy Carey in 1973 – was an opera singer and vocal coach before giving birth to her first child, while Alison faced personal struggles, including homelessness, throughout her life and had been on bad terms with her famous sister for several years.

In the past, Mariah has opened up about her complicated relationship with her mother, describing it as a “rainbow of emotions.”

In her memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” published in 2020, she said: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and conflicting realities. There has never only been black and white – there has been a whole rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a tightrope where pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment intertwine. A complicated love ties my heart to my mother’s.”
