“After this surgery I will be able to walk and move my arm; something I thought would never happen again. Words do not fit to thank all the doctors for what they have done for me”, expressed the beneficiary José Lander.

The plastic and reconstructive surgery service of the Mariana de Jesús Day Hospital (HDMJ), of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), performed a skin graft on a patient who had suffered severe burns on his body.

José Lander, 39, a native of the province of Esmeraldas, suffered second and third degree burns two months ago in different parts of his body that covered 25% of the body surface. His legs and one of his arms were the most affected.

In the first instance, he received medical attention at the Delfina Torres de Concha de Esmeraldas Hospital (MSP), then he was transferred to the Mariana de Jesús Hospital, since this health home has a dermatome, a team that performs skin grafts.

For the placement of the graft, the wounds must be clean and with a granulation tissue suitable for integration in 21 days, that is, with new formation of capillaries in the burn wound and without any infection.

The dermatome was in charge of removing the healthy skin from the patient’s body and then placing it on the affected parts. This surgical process took about four hours.

The donor area where the graft was obtained takes approximately 10 days to heal. For this to happen, it is important to know that the patient does not need another intervention, since healthy skin regenerates.

José will remain hospitalized in the HDMJ until the grafted skin fully adheres. Later, he will be transferred to Esmeraldas to continue his treatment; because once the wounds have healed, the patient must start rehabilitation therapies to resume their daily activities.
