General Short news

NIJMEGEN – The Marikenhuis will start four new support groups at the end of March. Talking about cancer is difficult. Outsiders often find it difficult to talk about such a loaded subject. Within a peer group it is often easier to talk to each other about serious subjects. Sharing experiences, supporting each other, recognition and acceptance are keywords in the peer support groups. Participants experience a lot of recognition and recognition. All peer groups are supervised by two trained volunteers.

– Group of fellow sufferers when cancer can no longer be cured. When you hear that the doctor can do nothing more for you, when there is no longer a cure, then your world collapses. Did you get this message? Do you need support and recognition from people who are in the same situation? Then a peer group may be important to you. The participants decide together which topics of conversation they consider important. Dates: Wednesday 29 March, 12 and 26 April, 10 and 24 May, 7 and 21 June and 5 July.

– Group of surviving relatives. When you lose your partner, or someone else you loved, your life changes dramatically. How should you proceed now? What are you running into and what are you doing right? How does your environment react to your grief? It often helps to process if you can share your feelings, thoughts and memories with fellow sufferers. This peer group is intended for all adults who are dealing with the loss of a loved one. Dates: Thursday 6 and 20 April, 4 and 18 May, 1 and 15 June.

– General peer group. In this group you will meet fellow sufferers who, just like you, have also been in contact with cancer. We exchange what concerns us and what can help us. Within the group we try to find and offer support in the uncertainty that cancer entails. We help you find comfort if you experience feelings of loneliness due to cancer. What exactly is discussed depends mainly on the participants in the group. This peer support group is intended for any adult who has been affected by cancer in any way. Dates: Tuesday April 11 and 25, May 9 and 23, June 6 and 20, July 4 and 18.

– Peer support group for women with breast cancer. If you have breast cancer, you are confronted with specific questions about being a woman. It can be nice to share it with women who face the same choices and dilemmas or have already gone through them. This offers safety and the opportunity to take the right decisions in peace and to take steps to be able to move on. Together we determine the topics of discussion. Consider, for example: Acceptance of your changed body; Whether or not reconstruction after a mastectomy; Hormone treatment and its consequences; Relationship and Sexuality; Heredity; Edema. This peer group is for women who have (had) to deal with breast cancer. Dates: Tuesday April 18, May 2, 16 and 30, June 13 and 27 and July 11 and 25.

You can sign up for one of these peer groups via www.marikenhuis.nl. After registration you will be invited for an introductory meeting. Participation costs 2.50 euros per meeting. You can find the Marikenhuis at the Slotemaker de B Ruinweg 163 in Nijmegen.
