«Marina Cicogna? A strong, combative woman.” this is how he defines the deceased producer the director Liliana Cavani.
«She was a true producer, from every point of view. Marina was really risking her money, not like now when there is so much help for productions. I was a direct risk to her.”
For which films did you, in your opinion, risk the most?
«Certainly in wanting to make some films by Elio Petri, such as “Investigation into a citizen above all suspicion” and “The working class goes to heaven”. She had film projects that she didn’t want anyone to do and she was very courageous and very serious in her commitment to the cinema that she loved completely… this is indisputable.”
He hasn’t produced his own films, however…
«Curiously, my 1970 film “The Cannibals” was produced by his younger brother, Ascanio, known as Bino, who unfortunately died by suicide. I learned of his death while I was in London at the home of the actress Britt Ekland, who played Antigone in that film and who, for some years, had been romantically linked to Bino: that evening, we were at dinner together and Britt received a phone call in which they told her about the tragedy.”
Did you then have other meetings with Marina?
«She was an exceptional photographer, she had a special talent for the image and I often visited her exhibitions. Furthermore, she often called me when she organized events, she had considerable respect for me. Just as I had respect for her: she was a producer who worked not only to bring money home, but to spend it on projects that had cultural significance.”
