French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who came in second in the last presidential election, would significantly improve her result if the vote were held tomorrow, according to a poll published on Wednesday.

The acute political and social crisis caused by the pension reform that has been shaking France for weeks seems to give far-right leader Marine Le Pen an advantage in the face of the 2027 presidential elections.

The leader of the National Group would obtain 31% of the votes if the first round of the presidential elections were held next Sunday, in the case of a single left-wing candidacy around the leader of the radical left Jean-Luc Mélenchon (22%) and against the former prime minister of Emmanuel Macron, Edouard Philippe, by the presidential majority (28%).

In 2022, Emmanuel Macron – who cannot run for re-election after two consecutive five-year terms – won 28% of the vote in the first round, Marine Le Pen 23% and Jean-Luc Mélenchon 22%.

If the left were not united, Marine Le Pen would be in the lead (29%) ahead of Edouard Philippe (26%).

“Their image has totally changed and also the structure of their vote. It is no longer the vote of the National Front of yesteryear, now it is a vote that captures everything,” explains the head of Ifop, Frédéric Dabi, author of this Ifop-Fiducial poll for Le Figaro Magazine and Sud Radio.

During the pension reform crisis, Marine Le Pen and her 87 deputies in the National Assembly kept a low profile, presenting a disciplined image and staying out of the sometimes violent demonstrations.

According to some people close to President Emmanuel Macron, the prospect of Marine Le Pen succeeding him at the Élysée would make him lose sleep.

Another Ifop study published on Wednesday reveals that the majority of respondents consider that Marine Le Pen is “close to the concerns of the French” (58%, +2 points in one year), “attached to democratic values” (57 %, +4 points), “competent” (52%, +6 points) and “able to reform the country” (51%, +8 points).

And 47% of those surveyed also consider that Marine Le Pen “has the stature of a President of the Republic” (+5 points).

The survey on voting intention was carried out online on March 30 and 31 with a sample of 1,105 people. The survey on the image of Marine Le Pen was carried out on March 28 and 29 among a sample of 1,002 people, representative of the French population over 18 years of age.
