Mosaics
Cover of the album “Mosaïques”, by Marine Sablonnière. PARATY

Opened by a transcription of Sephardic Jewish songs and closed by a folk song Irish, this program of an impressive stylistic variety is akin to a journey in space (national traditions, acoustic explorations) and in time (from the 13th century to the present day) that Marine Sablonnière performs with seven different flutes (including a double, to restore the score for two voices of the troubadour Jacques de Cambrai). Whatever the purpose of the music, its interpretation seems to have only one goal: the pleasure of a natural sharing. Whether it’s an orientalizing piece (Peter Deunov) where she cultivates hypnosis like a snake tamer, pieces riddled with technical pitfalls (like the Toccata by Markus Zahnhausen), which she flies over like a true Paganini on the recorder, or suites by Bach, father (Jean-Sébastien) and son (Carl Philipp Emanuel), Marine Sablonnière seduces with an above all expressive assurance. Including in the contemporary repertoire with the sensitive Daphnoé by François Rossé, all appeals and internalized echoes. Pierre Gervasoni

Sonny Rollins
Go West ! The Contemporary Records Albums
Pochette du coffret CD « Go West! The Contemporary Records Albums », de Sonny Rollins. CRAFT RECORDINGS-CONCORD/UNIVERSAL MUSIC

On March 7, 1957, saxophonist Sonny Rollins was in Los Angeles, at the studio of the Contemporary Records phonographic company. He invited bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne. This is the first time he has recorded without the harmonic support of piano or guitar. Some compositions, I’m an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande), Wagon Wheel or, from his pen, Way Out West, which gives its title to the album, evoke themes from the Wild West. On the cover, he poses in the desert, wearing a cowboy hat. The music transmits a great sense of space in constructions, developments of full freedom. In October 1958, Rollins was again with Contemporary, this time with pianist Hampton Hawes, guitarist Barney Kessel, double bassist Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne and, for one title, Victor Feldman on vibraphone. This Sonny Rollins and The Contemporary Leaders, less “experimental” certainly, is just as much in a strong expression of jazz. The whole, increased by different takes, reissued with care (new mastering, cardboard sleeve), is an essential part of Rollins’ career. Sylvain Siclier

Lucinda Williams
Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart
Pochette de l’album « Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart », de Lucinda Williams. HIGHWAY 20 RECORD/THIRTY TIGERS

“Let’s get the band together again”, launches like a manifesto Lucinda Williams at the opening of her new album. It must be said that this great lady of American rock has come a long way, after having suffered a stroke in 2020 which now prevents her from playing the guitar. But his voice is still there, rocky, on the go. This ordeal even brought him a renewed energy and conviction on his fifteenth studio effort, which brings together among his most catchy songs of a career already well supplied in the field. Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart is a superb album of resilience, where the songwriter finds herself very well surrounded, in particular by the next generation Angel Olsen and Margo Price, guitarist Tommy Stinson (The Replacements), and the boss himself Bruce Springsteen with his companion, Patti Scialfa, on two titles, including the moving ballad New York Comeback. On such heartbreaking confessions as Where The Song Will Find Me et Never Gonna Fade Awaythe heart of Lucinda Williams beats with the same intensity as those of her colleagues Emmylou Harris and Chrissie Hynde.
