The plenary session of the CPCCS met this Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 6:52 p.m., an hour and a half late from the initial call. The agenda of the day, which included eleven points, was altered when Yadira Saltos, a councilor identified with Correísmo, proposed reconsidering the election of Dunia Martínez. This session had already been postponed previously because the CPCCS members were summoned by the Oversight Commission of the National Assembly to explain Martínez’s initial appointment.

Saltos nominated Mario Godoy Naranjo, the third candidate on the list presented by the National Court, as president of the CJ. In a brief speech, he argued that it was the duty of the Council to comply with the law. Augusto Verduga supported Godoy’s candidacy, describing him as the most suitable to lead the CJ in “this crucial period.”

Voting Results

The vote resulted in four votes in favor of Godoy, two against and one abstention, distributed as follows:

– In favor: Nicole Bonifaz, Yadira Saltos, Johana Verdezoto and Augusto Verduga.

– Against: Andrés Fantoni and Mishel Calvache.

– Abstention: Juan Esteban Guarderas.

With this vote, Mario Godoy Naranjo officially assumes the presidency of the Judicial Council, consolidating a significant change in the structure of the judicial body. Godoy’s appointment promises a new approach to the administration of justice, at a time when transparency and efficiency of the judicial system are issues of high public interest. It remains to be seen how his leadership will impact future decisions and reforms within the Judicial Council.
