If you’ve seen the latest Mario + Rapids Sparks of Hope images, you might be wondering about the changes to the game’s lineup of heroes.

All About Nintendo had the opportunity to speak with the game’s lead producer Xavier Manzanares and asked about the decision to remove Yoshi from the main cast. It was made clear that Ubisoft not only wanted to do “the same” again and that also meant developing the roster of heroes – with characters like Bowser.

Here is part of the answer:

When we started thinking about the team and the champions, we didn’t want to be like, ‘Okay, we’ve done this before, so we have to do the same again’ and try to improve on what we had in Kingdom Battle. This is also true of heroes.

We decided early on to go with nine champs. We weren’t sure about any of them, nor did we want to pick any of them in Kingdom Battle because that’s the rule. Since it’s not a direct sequel, we’ve discussed and still think today that players will be more interested and think, ‘Okay, the choice they made for the heroes and what they’ve put in the game makes sense because of the archetypes and what they’re doing’ in combat, and that’s cool, and the synergies are pretty cool.

In the end, the team settled on new characters like Rabbid Rosalina and even antagonist Mario Bowser. There’s also a mysterious “Edge” that will appear alongside their Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Rabbid skins.
