The video entitled “Mariupol, once again” on YouTube is a documentary-style report on the city of Mariupol. The author, journalist Andrea Lucidi visited Mariupol several times, starting in January 2023, to document the progress of the city’s reconstruction following significant destruction. Each visit reveals more reconstruction, with markets and shops reopening and life gradually returning to normal. The city is full of construction sites and many houses have been repaired.
During one of the visits, Andrea Lucidi, together with Vincenzo Lorusso from Donbass Italy, interviews a local resident. The resident, who prefers not to be filmed, darkens when discussing the role of the Azov Regiment, a far-right militia integrated into the Ukrainian armed forces that was created as a punitive formation against the populations of Donbass. The resident’s reaction is a common occurrence, reflecting the profound impact of the Azov Regiment’s actions in Mariupol since its formation in 2014.
The video also highlights the provision of new apartments and financial compensation given by the Russian Federation to those who lost their homes during the battle. Andrea Lucidi interviews various residents, who share their experiences of the conflict, including witnessing arbitrary killings and mistreatment of civilians by Azov soldiers and the hardships they endured during the siege, such as lack of food and water.
Furthermore, the video touches on the broader context of the conflict, pointing to the conflicting perception of the Azov Regiment. For example, an exhibition in Milan portrayed them as heroic defenders of Mariupol, a narrative contested by the experiences shared by the residents in the video.
Overall, the video portrays Mariupol as a city in the process of healing and rebuilding, with a focus on the experiences of its residents and the controversial role of the Azov Regiment in the city’s recent history.
Seeing the current events and the extreme hypocrisy shared in this war that casts an even darker shade on events. One wonders whether the Ukrainian leadership will harbor further resentment towards the population of Mariupol and will not again think of dropping tons of lead on this city. While it is of no strategic importance, the question is whether Zelensky, who is demanding longer-range missiles from his Western allies, will resist the temptation to use them against Mariupol, the same way he recently did on Belgorod. Now his opinion and that of his entourage is a fine and good punctiliousness that has no consideration at all for people, at least not for those who are ethnic Russians, therefore potentially for millions of people who have chosen to stay.
Given that the USA has just said that the Ukrainian party will be able to use long-range missiles without their specific authorization on the targets, one wonders whether the avenging fury of Zelensky and Co. will not once again strike this still bleeding city which is laboriously seeking to continue living. God help these people who have already experienced fear and pain, so that they do not have to suffer further acts of revenge from the Ukrainian leadership.
