Mark Bunker Runs to Reclaim Clearwater City Council Seat, Faces Luna Staffer

by ethan.brook News Editor

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Mark Bunker, a former Clearwater City Council member and vocal critic of the Church of Scientology, is seeking to regain his seat in the upcoming municipal election. Bunker, who was ousted from the council in 2024, is running for Seat 5, which is being vacated by Lina Teixeira, who announced in January she would not seek reelection. The race is shaping up to be another contentious one for Bunker, who will face Sam Wilson, a staffer for U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.

Bunker’s previous stint on the council, beginning in 2020, was marked by his willingness to publicly address concerns about the Church of Scientology’s influence in Clearwater, a topic largely avoided by previous politicians. He was initially elected with the support of Leah Remini, the actress and outspoken former Scientologist, who has dedicated herself to exposing the practices of the church since leaving in 2013. Yet, in 2024, Bunker lost his reelection bid to Ryan Cotton despite outraising him significantly, taking in nearly $55,000 compared to Cotton’s just over $23,000.

A History of Controversy and Activism

Bunker’s involvement in challenging the Church of Scientology dates back to 2000, when he began working with the Lisa McPherson Trust, an organization dedicated to exposing what it described as deceptive and abusive practices within the church. He managed multimedia for the trust, recording interviews with former Scientologists and documenting protests. This long-standing opposition has made him a central figure in the ongoing debate surrounding the church’s presence in Clearwater.

The upcoming election isn’t Bunker’s first attempt to return to the council. His 2024 campaign drew support from anti-Scientology activists, including Aaron Smith-Levin, a Clearwater resident and co-founder of the Aftermath Foundation, a group assisting those leaving Scientology. However, Smith-Levin was later removed from the Aftermath Foundation Board over alleged ethics violations and, last year, was jailed after a court revoked his bail related to charges of battery against a Church of Scientology security guard. It remains to be seen whether Bunker will distance himself from Smith-Levin during this election cycle.

The Opponent: A Luna Staffer with Establishment Backing

Bunker’s opponent, Sam Wilson, currently serves as the District Director for U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and has received her endorsement. Wilson’s political experience also includes internships with U.S. Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Gus Bilirakis of Florida, as well as then-U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio. According to his LinkedIn profile, he also previously worked with Citizens Defending Freedom. This background suggests Wilson will likely appeal to a more conservative electorate.

The dynamic sets the stage for a familiar contest for Bunker, who faced a well-funded opponent with establishment backing in 2024. The race is expected to be competitive, mirroring the challenges he encountered in his previous bid for reelection.

Election Timeline and Key Dates

The election is scheduled for August 18. If no other candidates enter the race, the election will be decided on that date. However, if a third candidate emerges, the election will proceed to a General Election on November 3, with the top two vote-getters advancing. Qualifying for the race begins May 4 and closes May 15 at 5 p.m.

As of now, neither Bunker nor Wilson have filed campaign finance reports, which are due next month, according to Florida Politics. This early stage of the campaign leaves much of the race’s trajectory uncertain.

The Clearwater municipal election promises to be a closely watched contest, particularly given the ongoing debate surrounding the Church of Scientology’s influence in the city. The outcome will likely signal the direction of the city’s approach to addressing concerns about the church’s presence and its impact on the community.
