The American actor Mark Margolis, known for his role as Héctor Salamanca in the series ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’, has died at the age of 83, his family reported this Friday. His son, Morgan Margolis, actor and director of the Knitting Factory Entertainment company, has specified in a statement that the death took place on Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

The actor earned an Emmy nomination for his work as ‘Uncle’ Salamanca, leader of a drug cartel in Vince Gilligan’s fiction starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. Margolis continued his portrayal of the drug lord in the spin-off “Better Caul Saul,” starring Bob Odenkirk, for five more seasons.

Born on November 26, 1939, in Philadelphia, Margolis moved to New York in his youth to study drama at the Actors Studio, of which Al Pacino is currently co-director. His career in the entertainment industry began in the 1970s in series like ‘Kojak’ or movies like ‘Short Eyes’, and in 1983 he played the bodyguard Alberto ‘Shadow’ in the acclaimed film ‘The price of power (Scarface)’ by Brian DePalma.

He also participated in films such as ‘Requiem for a dream’ and ‘Ace Ventura: a different detective’. The actor was also a collaborator with Oscar-winning director Darren Aronofsky, and was part of films such as ‘Black Swan’, ‘Pi, Faith in Chaos’ and ‘Noah’. The role of Father Ávila in the film ‘La fuente de la vida’ was written specifically for Margolis. His last performance on television was that of Carmine Conti in the series ‘Your Honor’ (2023), by Peter Moffat, in which he once again shared credits with Cranston.

In total, his filmography exceeds 160 film and television projects.
