Mr. Baitas, who was responding to a question on the supply of food products during Ramadan and the measures taken by the government to control prices during the press briefing at the end of the weekly meeting of the Government Council, said indicated that the meetings held recently at the Ministry of the Interior and including different sectors, highlighted the abundance of supply of products which are in high demand during this blessed month.
He added that price controls continue throughout the year with a view to combating all forms of speculation and price manipulation and the various illegal practices which are capable of disrupting the normal functioning of markets and harm the health and safety of citizens as well as the rights of consumers and their purchasing power.
“The process of price control by the competent services extends throughout the year,” he said, emphasizing the continued mobilization of the authorities for the control of the quality of food products in the various points of sale.
Mr. Baitas noted that the various interventions supervised by walis and governors in the prefectures and provinces of the Kingdom during the year 2023 concerned more than 322,000 points of sale, giving rise to 15,966 offenses, an increase of 28% compared to the year 2022.
The minister added that 12,575 infringement reports were drawn up and transmitted to the competent courts, and that nearly 1,058 tonnes of products unfit for consumption or not conforming to current standards were destroyed.
Concerning the year 2024, he affirmed that 31,383 points of sale were controlled during the period from January 1 to February 21, having identified 1,948 offenses, of which 374 cases were the subject of warnings to offenders and 1,574 The offenses gave rise to reports, specifying that 70 tonnes of products unfit for consumption were also seized and destroyed.
