The new LH deputy Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) is faced with wolf cracks. She wants to have them hunted legally and change the law to do so.

After the latest wolf killings in Saalfelden, Maria Alm, in Mühlbach am Hochkönig and Rußbach, the affected farmers are upset and are demanding quick action.

In the new state government, deputy governor Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) is responsible for the department. On Tuesday evening (after the editorial deadline) she met those affected in Maria Alm. As a first step, Svazek announced regulations for the shooting of individual problem animals. “We are in the assessment phase.” Within a week it should be “fire free”. For the time being, she has to make do with the existing instruments, says Svazek.

So far, a predator has to kill 25 livestock

In a second step, she wants to revise the management plan. So far, a predator has to kill 25 livestock before something happens. Svazek is taking too long. The law needs to be changed in order to move from individual cases to general solutions. Addendum: That won’t be possible before the summer. The animals are to be pushed through legal hunting into areas where no alpine farming takes place. “Wolves have a social structure. They feel the pressure of the hunt and stay where they are left alone. You can train the wolf.”

Obonya signaled willingness to talk

At the meeting with the Salzburg Week, the FPÖ boss is moving into her office. Actor Cornelius Obonya was not there yet, but the two offices are in the process of coordinating an appointment. After his protest against black and blue, Svazek invited him to an interview: “I’ve found that reservations can often be quickly cleared up in personal conversations.”

No muzzle for FPÖ officials

Otherwise, she asserts that she wants to work objectively and constructively in her new role. “Of course, none of our officials at the grassroots will be muzzled, but of course I assume that the government parties’ commitment to respectful cooperation will have an effect,” says the 31-year-old from Großgmain.

New tasks for the State Environmental Ombudsman’s Office

Svazek is considering new tasks for the State Environmental Ombudsman’s Office. From now on, this should no longer be able to delay procedures for “mini-projects” such as forest paths or children’s playgrounds. As an example, she cites the expansion of the entrance area at the open-air museum. Additional costs of 2.5 million euros were incurred because the project had to be relocated ten meters due to the pit ground beetle.

Skeptical about wind power, but: “I’ll be convinced”

When it comes to wind turbines, Svazek remains skeptical. She is happy to be persuaded by good arguments, but believes that water and photovoltaics are the better alternatives. There is a consensus for the Windsfeld project near Flachau.

In childcare, she wants to reward internal family care. At the same time, more assistants are needed in kindergarten (from the age of 3) in addition to the academic staff – these could be mothers with additional training.
