Lebanon – Tensions escalated in Lebanon on Sunday following a violent clash near the Christian town of al-Kahla, triggered by an overturned truck belonging to the Shiite terrorist organization Hezbollah. The incident resulted in the death of two individuals, further fueling sectarian tensions in the country.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara Boutros A-Rai, Lebanon’s highest-ranking Christian cleric, issued a strong message, urging all parties in the nation to unite under the state flag and halt the use of weapons. Speaking on Sunday, Patriarch A-Rai emphasized, “It is not possible to live on one land when there is more than one country, more than one army, one authority, and one sovereignty.”

The clash began when an overturned Hezbollah truck blocked a road near al-Kahla. Curiosity led residents to inquire about the truck’s cargo, demanding access. In the resulting exchange of fire, a Hezbollah member and a resident were killed, according to a security source. A representative from the Hezbollah organization claimed, “Local militants from the Christian town opened fire on the truck, killing the driver.”

In the wake of the incident, scores of al-Kahla’s residents took to the streets, demonstrating against Hezbollah. Protesters chanted slogans condemning Iran and its regime, holding signs advocating for resistance against Iranian occupation. Some protesters brandished Lebanese flags with the words “Iran out” and “restoring the country from Iranian occupation.”

A grieving son spoke to Reuters, recounting the horrifying events. He explained, “We were a short distance from the truck, but we couldn’t see what was inside. At least three people from Hezbollah started shooting at us with machine guns and a pistol. My father fell to the floor, but the shooting continued, and we couldn’t reach him.” He emphasized the need for an immediate end to the violence.

The Lebanese army promptly intervened, preventing further bloodshed and securing the area. The contents of the truck were subsequently brought to a nearby military base, and traffic on the affected road was reopened. The incident marks the most serious confrontation between Hezbollah and its Lebanese rivals since violent clashes erupted in the country nearly two years ago, heightening sectarian tensions.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called for calm, assuring the public that an official investigation had been initiated in response to the deaths. Amidst the rising tensions, lawmakers from the Lebanese Forces party, a Christian political group opposed to Hezbollah, accused the terrorist organization of transporting weapons. Other political sources questioned why such weapons were being transported in a peaceful civilian area, far from Israel’s border.

The clash near al-Kahla highlights the urgent need for dialogue and de-escalation to avoid further sectarian strife in Lebanon. As the nation grapples with political challenges, economic hardships, and social unrest, unity becomes ever more crucial to pave the way for a peaceful and prosperous future.
