This second edition provided an ideal opportunity for a host of parliamentarians and founding partners of the APM to interact with political and economic actors from the public and private sectors, as well as with academia and civil society.
This two-day event (July 11-12) also provided an opportunity for various public and private sector officials, as well as professors, experts and civil society actors, to discuss ways and mechanisms to address the challenges of producing low-cost energy in the Mediterranean and Gulf regions.
This meeting was also an opportunity to discuss the solutions to be implemented, with a view to promoting entrepreneurship, SMEs and economic growth, in light of the challenges linked to digitalization and artificial intelligence.
In a speech on the occasion, the President of the APM, President of the House of Advisors, Enaam Mayara, stressed the leading role of parliamentarians in promoting economic integration in the Mediterranean region, noting that the economies of this area are increasingly integrated at the global level.
After focusing on the major challenges facing the countries of the region, mainly related to economic and social development, Mr. Mayara indicated that “legislation alone is not enough, it is necessary to combine political wills.”
In this context, he warned of the security dangers linked to various forms of violence and discrimination, calling for “rejecting all forms of extremism and human trafficking, as well as all factors that hinder the progress of many societal projects.”
The Marrakech Parliamentary Economic Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region, whose constitutive session took place in December 2022 in the Ochre City, promises to strengthen cooperation between the two geographical areas and intensify efforts to jointly address common challenges, at their forefront economic growth and the preservation of peace and security in the region.
This major meeting, initiated by the Chamber of Councillors, an active member of the APM, thus establishes itself as an interface for parliamentary diplomacy and a crucial stage for the debate on the most pressing economic and environmental issues in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region.
Through the active participation of parliamentarians in this Forum, the organizers aim to bring about a paradigm shift in the face of the major social and economic challenges of climate change and to promote more effective economic integration in the region capable of withstanding exogenous factors, while creating an expanded South-South trade network and establishing an integrated green energy production and marketing zone, enjoying self-sufficiency.
