Marrakech: Interactive workshops on environmental education for the benefit of more than 600 students from Al Haouz affected by the earthquake

Organized over two days, under the theme “Marrakech, Sustainable City”, this initiative aims to offer psychological support to these students transferred from Al Haouz and accommodated and cared for in several reception establishments in the city of Marrakech to continue their studies.

Initiated in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the Science Mediation Center under the Mohammed V University of Rabat, this action is also proposes to help beneficiaries so that they can overcome the psychological crisis caused by this natural disaster and engage positively in a safe educational environment where they can feel a sense of stability, while integrating elements of education into sustainable development.

Speaking on this occasion, Ayman Cherkaoui, director of the Hassan II International Environmental Training Center under the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, underlined that this activity is of great importance in the sense that it serves space conducive to the exchange of ideas on various topics related to the environment, sustainability and innovation.

At the same time, he highlighted the particular interest that the Foundation continues to grant to the Ocher City, through the Program “Safeguarding the Palmeraie of Marrakech” within the framework of which, the Observatory of the Palmeraie of Marrakech plays a fundamental role.

At the same time, Mr. Cherkaoui reviewed certain activities and programs carried out by the Foundation, among others, the implementation in collaboration with partners, of activities linked to climate change, or even linked to sustainable tourism.

For his part, the representative of the UNDP in Morocco, Karam Amzil, indicated that this activity aligns with the strategic priorities of the action plan of this UN body in Morocco for the period 2023-2027, which aims to support the transition of the Kingdom towards an integrated, global and resilient sustainable development model in the face of climate change and international crises.

And to continue that this transition can only be achieved through sustainable programs and projects which place the education of rising generations at the heart of its strategy.

These workshops, he estimated, represent an opportunity to highlight the importance of supervision and environmental education of young people with a view to promoting school life, building “environmental citizenship”, and disseminating the culture of sustainable development among the beneficiary students, while instilling in them the principles and values ​​of environmental citizenship.

“This initiative is part of the +Marrakech Sustainable City+ project, implemented by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development in partnership with the UNDP,” he recalled, letting it be known that this project, through one of its axes, intends to support a certain number of public schools in Marrakech, in order to strengthen their sustainability and offer a healthy environment to learners via a set of interventions linked in particular to energy efficiency, rational management of water resources, sustainable waste management and the development of green spaces within schools.

For his part, the director of the Regional Academy of Education and Training (AREF) Marrakech-Safi, Ahmed Karimi, stressed that this action is in line with the High Solicitude of which His Majesty King Mohammed VI does not stops surrounding students from areas affected by the earthquake

This initiative is also part of the objectives set by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, in particular the aspects linked to raising awareness of everything that is respectful of the environment, including sustainable cities and educational workshops”, he clarified, indicating that the objective of these workshops is to introduce students to innovative approaches, such as robotics, as well as to topics relating to solving environmental problems.

In a statement to MAP, the head of environmental education and sustainable development programs at the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, Meryem Khodari noted that this initiative is part of the dynamic of ecological transition of the city of Marrakech, since it aims to provide support to more than 600 students from secondary schools in Al Haouz affected by the earthquake of September 8.

Through these activities, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection and its partners aim to popularize the concepts of education for sustainable development, thus contributing to raising awareness among young people on environmental issues, she explained. noting that these activities take place in a setting conducive to positive expression. The aim is to bring comfort to young people and restore a feeling of stability, despite the difficult circumstances they endure.

Spread over two days, these interactive workshops will allow young participants and their supervisors to discover in detail the “Young Environmental Reporters” (JRE) and “Safeguarding the Marrakech Palmeraie” programs supported by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, as well as the “Marrakech Sustainable City” program supported by the UNDP.

The emphasis will also be placed, through dedicated workshops, on robotics based on educational games and virtual reality, in addition to artistic activities, with the support of experts.

The menu of this event also includes animation and entertainment activities and a visit to the Mohammed VI Museum for Water Civilization in Marrakech.
