“The Macron government is massacring public services,” deplores Roselyne Garcia during a demonstration in Marseille, this Friday, October 13. With a few thousand other people, she came to march to “live, work, age with dignity” and not depend “on charity”.

There were 10,000 according to the CGT, but 2,100 according to the Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters. In any case, many women responded to the inter-union call.

“Our parents and our grandparents fought so that France had a social protection system, that people should not live on charity. The Macron government is massacring public services, social protection, we can bear witness to this, we retirees,” Roselyne Garcia, of the Solidaires retirees union, told AFP.

A few meters further, Coline Beltrando, general practitioner and psychiatrist, testifies to “the lack of nursing staff everywhere”: “In psychiatry, instead of recruiting staff, the State is closing beds”, she recalls. “Many emergency services are understaffed, doctors are becoming exasperated, and so are patients,” adds this 35-year-old woman, her stethoscope around her neck.

Armelle Salaun, CFDT union representative who works at customs, regrets “the multiplication of reorganizations” and the “weakening” of the customs administration. “However, customs is an essential public service for citizens and businesses. We control imported products, we contribute to the fight against the laundering of drug trafficking,” she emphasizes, hoping for more staff and fewer permanent reorganization.

Within the procession, some had tears in their eyes, sad at no longer having the means to “help the public”.
