Summary of the case
That’s what Marte Mjøs Persen told NRK, after it was confirmed that Lubna Jaffery will be the lead candidate for the Vestland Labour Party.
Persen herself asked the county party to vote for Jaffery.
– I know I would have lost that vote. I think it is indeed better that we unite behind one candidate,Persen told NRK.
Persen tells NRK that she will remain as leader of the Vestland Labour Party until the annual meeting in March 2025, but then that will also be over.
– I will ask them to find a new leader. now I am completely stepping out of politics, observes Persen.
What the future holds for the former minister is unclear.
– Now I will finish the job, and then I will look for a job. I have a strong social engagement, so there is a lot that could be interesting.
Marte Mjøs Persen says she is now stepping back from politics.
Mjøs Persen opened Saturday’s nomination meeting for the Vestland Labour Party by announcing that she is giving up the fight to be reelected to the Parliament.
– I will not let this meeting be about me, but just want to say thank you for the trust I have received. I want this meeting to be about those who will take this party forward, Persen said from the podium.
persen went on to encourage members to vote for Culture Minister lubna Jaffery for the top spot on the list.
– When I ask you to vote for Lubna for the top spot, it also comes with a wish that you unite us here at this meeting.
The call to vote for Lubna Jaffery and not for herself was explained by Persen with the importance of the party standing united.
In Jonas Gahr Støre’s government,Persen previously served as Minister of Oil and Energy before later becoming Minister of Labour and Inclusion.
Just after 3:00 PM on Saturday, it was clear that the Vestland Labour Party agreed on Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery as the lead candidate.
A smiling lubna Jaffery met NRK after it became clear that she will be the county party’s lead candidate.
– I am grateful and humbled by the trust I have received today, says Lubna Jaffery to NRK.
– This shows that Marte is a generous politician, who is primarily concerned with us being united as a party, Jaffery says and adds:
– I am grateful to Marte. She has done a really good job for our party in various positions for many years.
Today’s event is in line with the wishes of the nomination committee.
The nomination committee for the Vestland Labour Party did not include Marte Mjøs Persen in its suggestion for the parliamentary list.
This despite the fact that she had made it clear on her Facebook profile that she wanted to continue.
– This comes as a surprise and unexpectedly, and means that I have to go into deep thought, Persen told NRK when the recommendation became a fact this fall.
At that time, she stated that she would consider whether it would be relevant to fight for a list position.
– I have never thought that my entire working life would be in politics, but this came earlier than I had wished, Persen tells NRK on

What are the key challenges facing the Labor Party in Norway as it prepares for the 2025 elections?
interview between the Time.news Editor and Political expert
Editor: Welcome to Time.news! Today, we’re diving into a important transition in Norwegian politics with expert insight from Dr. Erik Solberg, a political analyst specializing in Nordic governance. Erik, thank you for joining us.
Dr. Solberg: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss the evolving political landscape.
Editor: Let’s start with Marte Mjøs Persen’s recent announcement. She has decided to step down from her political roles and has endorsed Lubna Jaffery as the new lead candidate for the Vestland Labour Party. What does this say about the current state of the Labour party in Vestland?
Dr. Solberg: Persen’s decision reflects a strategic shift within the Labour Party. By stepping aside voluntarily and supporting Jaffery without a vote, she’s demonstrating a desire for unity and a fresh direction. this move could strengthen the party’s chances in the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2025, especially since leadership transitions can often be fraught with division.
Editor: Speaking of Jaffery, what potential does she bring to the role?
Dr. Solberg: Lubna Jaffery represents a new generation of leadership. She has the opportunity to connect with younger voters and those who may feel marginalized. Her election without opposition suggests a strong, unified backing from the party, which is crucial as they prepare for the electoral challenges ahead. The Labour Party has to resonate with a diverse electorate to reclaim its historical strength.
Editor: marte Mjøs Persen has had a notable career as Minister of Oil and Energy, and also Minister of Labour and Inclusion. How might her departure impact the party’s policies moving forward?
Dr. Solberg: Persen’s experience in critical ministerial positions means her absence will be felt, especially in energy and social policy areas. However, it also opens the door for new ideas. Jaffery may focus on contemporary issues such as climate change and social equity, which are becoming increasingly central to public discourse. Change can sometimes lead to revitalization, especially if Jaffery can effectively harness public sentiment.
Editor: Persen has said that her future plans are uncertain, but she expressed a desire to maintain a strong social engagement. what roles do you think she could pursue outside of politics?
Dr. Solberg: Given her background and experience, there are numerous avenues for Persen. She might engage in non-profit work, focus on advocacy in energy and labour rights, or even enter academia, sharing her insights with future leaders. The skills she developed in her political career are highly transferable; many organizations would value her expertise in policy advancement and organizational leadership.
Editor: As we head into the 2025 elections, what challenges do you foresee for the Labour party and Jaffery as their new face?
dr. Solberg: The party must navigate various challenges, including economic concerns, public trust, and competition from other parties. They need to clearly articulate their vision for the future, especially in areas such as sustainability and social policy. Jaffery will also need to establish her voice and identity quickly in a politically charged atmosphere. Effective communication and coalition-building will be key to overcoming these hurdles.
Editor: these are indeed uncertain times for many political figures. As we conclude, what overarching message do you think Persen’s transition sends to both her constituents and future leaders in norway?
Dr. Solberg: Persen’s transition underscores the importance of adaptability in politics. it’s a reminder that leadership isn’t just about maintaining a position but also knowing when to pass the torch. It sends a powerful message about collaboration and unity, emphasizing that sometimes, the best decisions are those that prioritize collective success over personal ambition.
Editor: thank you, Dr.Solberg, for your insights. the political landscape in norway is certainly evolving, and it will be engaging to see how these changes unfold in the next few years.
Dr. Solberg: Absolutely! Thank you for the opportunity to discuss these significant developments.
