The Cannes Film Festival continues on Sunday May 21 with the screening of “Marthe et Pierre Bonnard”, a new film by director Martin Provost, in which Vincent Macaigne portrays the painter Pierre Bonnard and Cécile de France his wife, Marthe Bonnard.
Under the spotlight, a film couple, Cécile de France and Vincent Macaigne, became for the time of a film, Marthe and Pierre Bonnard, for the film Bonnard, Pierre et Marthe, directed by Martin Provost. He, the painter of colors and happiness, whose life changed in 1893 after he met the one who was to become his muse forever, his obsession, his reason for living. “They are inseparable, feed each other. Pierre is inspired by his body in motion, its vitality, its mystery, its quirkiness also to feed his work. Marthe needs her loving gaze just to stay alive”notes the actress.
The life of Marthe guided by a mystery and a lie
Pierre will have spent 50 years painting his adored Marthe with 400 paintings in total, nudes especially to tell the carnal bond of these two epicureans with however a reserve, the face of Marthe is her mystery. “He had great difficulty painting Marthe’s gaze. He erased it all the time, never really succeeded in painting Marthe well in the end. (…) Finally, we realize that Marthe had a huge secret and that there was this mystery”says Vincent Macaigne.Because all his life, Marche lied about his name, his age, his origins. Before marrying her late in life, Bonnard learned of it and forgave her. “She lost Pierre in her lies and lost herself. I think it sharpened in the love passion and in the search through the painting of the Marthe mystery” explains Martin Provost. In the 1920s, she also tried her hand at pastel under the nickname Marthe Soulanges. A third identity for the one who has not finished, 81 years after her death, to reveal all her secrets.
