These statues have been placed for 20 people, including 6-time women’s world boxing champion, London Olympics bronze medalist and famous boxer Mary Kom.
Referring to this park, Chief Minister Biran Singh said on his Facebook page, “Olympic Park is ready for opening. We can see the statues of our famous Olympic achievers who have made our country proud.”
But an interview given by her husband Anler Garong about the origin of Mary Kom’s statue has caused controversy. In an interview with a local newspaper, he said, “The statue of my wife Mary Kom in the Olympic Park is not like her.”
This has caused controversy.
“I have been assured by the Prime Minister’s office that Mary Kom’s statue will be replaced before the opening of the Olympic Park,” Jimmy Kom, Mary Kom’s brother, said.
But when asked about this in the Chief Minister’s office, they said, “We will not talk about this issue.”
But Jimmy Kom added, “This is his (Anler Garong) personal issue. My sister was out of town. She has just returned. She came to know about the matter only on Wednesday. Anler’s comments may be misunderstood when there are statues in honor of our men and women.” He said.
