jpnn.comJAKARTA – Eradicating online gambling is a state task because it is related to law enforcement.

If the state is seen as not carrying out its role properly in eradicating online gambling, then the community as a civil society force can urge and pressure the state to eradicate online gambling.

The opinion was conveyed by a sociologist from Jakarta State University, Abdi Rahmat. According to him, the role of society in the area of social control is actually preventive. The approach can be institutionalist.

“This means strengthening social institutions through strengthening social norms and values that consider online gambling as a deviation from religious values, hard work values, and responsibility values. This can be done through socialization and education in families, schools, religious activities and education through mass media,” said Abdi.

If it is offensive, Abdi said, community organizations can play an advocacy role in campaigning to eradicate online gambling and urging the government and law enforcement agencies to eradicate online gambling.

“Various advocacy strategies, from soft (campaigns), hard (class action, demonstrations), to advocacy networks/alliances, can be carried out by community organizations,” said Abdi.

President Joko Widodo has formed an Online Gambling Eradication Task Force.

The Online Gambling Task Force is led by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto. Its members consist of elements from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Cabinet Secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform, Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection.

If the state is seen as not carrying out its role properly in eradicating online gambling, then the community as a civil society force can pressure it.
