Massini brings Freud to the Pergola «Dreams and our shaded areas»

There is something both terrible and beautiful about the moment we decide to look inside. Freud invites us to accept an appointment with ourselves, in a profound and introspective research», he says Stefano Massini, who resumes his decennial work on The interpretation of dreamsfreely inspired by the writings of Sigmund Freud, and brings him to the stagepreviewed at the Teatro Era in Pontedera on 10 and 11 December, then in the Sala Grande of the Teatro della Pergola from 14 to 18 December.

He welcomes us into the intimate atmosphere of his home, just outside the center of Campi Bisenzio, in the oratory of San Giovanni Battista «al Santuccio», dated 1300, where he played with friends as a child. In this which they liked to call “haunted house”, now we talk about dreams. «A very strong emotion beats inside me. It’s a project that has always accompanied me, we’ve been holding hands for almost 13 years. He has decided to take shape now that I am the same age as Freud when he wrote it, without having followed a precise process. I think more of a sort of layering of elements that he traveled parallel to Lehman Trilogy. I’m playing the Tony Award card, that award changed my life, attracting multiplied attention to me».


Winning that was the realization of a dream, here too, but with open eyes, and entered him in the empyrean of theater writers, like Miller, Green, Williams. Massini stages a colorful mosaic, a human catalog which is an invitation to the art of maieutics: he interprets, in a triple binary, himself, Freud, and the narrator. She does it by manipulating the sounds, the diaries, the letters – like the correspondence between Freud and Einstein – the drawings. This is a network of stories, in dialogue with music and other sound forms, a Ronconian show, where language is decomposed, even through lapses, into a labyrinth of methods and paths that lead to their understanding. «In the moment in which we tell a dream, our rational part intervenes, which through words applies a censorship. If, on the other hand, we draw it, as Freud asked his patients to do by filling in a single sheet, the words have no weight, and the result is free from the filter».

Sometimes it would take a lock pick to get into it, in those dreams, whispered glances into someone’s room, passing from one eye like a thief from the window. «Stefano writes ballads with just talking», says Enrico Fink, author of the music, and it is true, starting from the music of the words he gets to touch the most intimate essence of thoughts, which recognize and find each other. The idea is to go to the theater to discover something more about ourselves, translating certain hidden parts by reading inside, as if it were a tutorial. «The interpretation of dreams it is the text that profoundly marked the 1900s. It is the story of our gray areas, of those whirlpools that call the dark part that belongs to us, the monster, the beast, the dark area that only in a dream you make speak. She goes out at night, without shame, asking to be heard. This is a pedagogical show, an invitation to finally look inside. Why do we dream? Why is that need so necessary? The answer comes from the analysis of clinical cases, capable of always revealing something about the laws and rules of that oneiric dramaturgy, as mysterious as it is full of charm».
