The accident happened in a 19-storey apartment complex in the Bronx. The fire was put out by more than 200 firefighters.

Daniel Negro, commissioner of the New York City Fire Department, said the condition of 32 people was critical. Negro told a news conference that the fire was caused by a faulty electric space heater. The heater was in the bedroom of an apartment. The rapidly spreading room and apartment were looted.

19 people have been confirmed dead. Many others are in critical condition. “It’s the most dangerous fire in history,” Mayor Eric Adams told CNN.
