British police have launched an investigation into an attempt to massively collect compromising information on members of the British Parliament; some members of the government believe that a “foreign state” is behind it.
As Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru, Politico reports this with reference to sources.
“A police spokesman told Politico that the force is investigating a complaint of ‘malicious messages’ sent to an unnamed MP after more than a dozen UK MPs… were targeted with enticing personalized messages,” the outlet said.
According to the publication, some senior Conservative MPs believe that a “hostile state power” is behind this campaign. At the same time, experts believe that this is most likely “the work of a criminal group that is looking for incriminating materials.”
It is noted that the messages received by members of parliament, as a rule, followed the same pattern: the sender claimed that he already knew his victim, that the communication took place “at a certain political event or in a Westminster bar”. They then expressed “embarrassment at not remembering each other.” According to the newspaper, in some cases this ended in the exchange of intimate photographs.
Among the victims of the attackers are three members of parliament, including a current minister in the British government, two political journalists, a TV presenter, etc. “The targets (of the attackers – editor’s note) cover both the ruling Conservative and opposition Labor parties,” the publication reports.
