Entities, activists and groups have met this Sunday in Tarragona to ask for the Halt of the Hard Rock Entertainment World project. Under the slogan “We defend the earth, we build the future”, the demonstrators have protested in one of the largest mobilizations against the recreational macro-complex that is to be built in the municipal area of the municipalities of Salou and Vilaseca.
The spokesperson for the ‘Aturem Hard Rock’ platform, Eloi Redón, has affirmed that the Government has Postponed the approval of the Urban Master Plan (PDU) due “peer pressure“and the political “reluctance” around the project. Given the possibility that the PDU is approved in an extraordinary call, Redón has advanced that the protest actions “will not stop.”
The Paseo de las Palmeras in Tarragona has been the starting point of the unitary demonstration against the Hard Rock project. According to the organization, more than 4,000 people have joined the mobilization, along with some 80 entities, unions and collectives of the Camp de Tarragona and the Lands of the Ebro. The clamor has been unitary to reject the ludic macro-complex and the economic model that they assure that it emerges. Even so, along the way, other demands in defense of the territory related to the petrochemical industry, the implementation of energy macro-projects or mass tourism have also been heard.

This is the case of the struggle linked to the Ebro river, led by the Platform in Defense of the Ebro (PDE); one of the entity’s spokespersons, Joan Antoni Panisello, has remarked that if the Hard Rock project goes ahead, it will represent a greater “pressure for water resources“In the context of drought. In this sense, Panisello has criticized that the decisions that involve the Camp de Tarragona and the Lands of the Ebro “are taken from the offices”.
This Sunday’s march has reached Plaza de los Carros, a point near the Territorial Services building where the Camp de Tarragona town planning commissions are held. There, the spokesman for the Aturem Hard Rock platform, Eloi Redón, has made an assessment of the postponement of the approval of the PDU: “We see that there is more and more talk in Parliament and even, in this week’s plenary session, despite that many parties were in favor of the project, there is more reluctance and they put more trouble. With all this social context, we believe that it is one of the determining factors because it is not clear to them to approve a project of these characteristics”, he has sentenced. With this scenario, the platform fears that the Government will convene an extraordinary commission in summer to approve the PDU in a time when citizen mobilization “is more difficult.” If this possibility ends up being fulfilled, Redón has advanced that there will be new protest actions.
