Massive protest against disempowerment of the Mexican election regulator – America

by time news

Despite the very controversial figures, these were the largest protests to date against the government of left-wing populist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico. At least 90,000 people – according to the ruling party-controlled city administration – but probably hundreds of thousands took to the streets on Sunday to demonstrate against a planned government reform that could have a massive impact on the holding of elections. The reason for this is the government’s plan to withdraw large parts of the funding from the independent electoral authority INE, which would make future elections much more uncertain. The exact reasons for the plan are unclear – and it seems quite possible that it is primarily about the president’s personal hatred of the authority.
