Local outlets reported that two tanks owned by Levira Distillery were responsible for the deluge, resulting in a spectacle captured in viral videos.
The small town, which is inhabited by approximately 2,000 people, found itself engulfed in a river of red wine as it rushed down a steep hill. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, but the flood did cause significant material damage. The red liquid inundated nearby roads, land, and even made its way into at least one cellar, as per the Portuguese newspaper Diário de Coimbra.
The incident triggered a local environmental alert, with the Anadia Fire Department stepping in to prevent the wine from contaminating the nearby Certima River. Reports from local media indicated that spillage was a cause for concern.
Levira Distillery, the owner of the tanks responsible for the mishap, promptly issued an apology. The company assured the public that it would take full responsibility for any damages caused by the incident. “We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately,” the distillery stated in a press release. “We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible.”
In an effort to address the environmental impact, Levira Distillery announced that the soil soaked with wine would be transported to a special treatment plant. This action aims to prevent any long-term harm to the surrounding ecosystem.
