Mastering Your Adventure: Essential Settings Guide for Black Myth: Wukong
We help you choose the right options in the settings menu.

Black Myth: Wukong has been released for PS5 and PC. Xbox owners still have to be patient, as the release on Series X/S has been postponed indefinitely. However, we have already taken a look at the settings menu on the PlayStation 5 and are providing some initial tips to help you optimize your action-packed journey through mythical China.

We will update this guide for you: For now, we have written down a few basic tips and impressions for you. Of course, we will regularly update this guide in the coming days to help you perfectly optimize your gaming experience.

Controller

  • Input type: B (for players who play a lot of Souls, especially from FromSoftware)

Explanation: You have two controller layouts to choose from. In Type B, the light and heavy attacks are assigned to R1 and R2, which should be convenient for those used to (most) Souls games. Although Black Myth is not a Soulslike but an action-adventure that merely uses elements from the genre, the title is quite popular in the Souls community.

However, there is no fundamentally better variant here. In Input Type A, light and heavy attacks are assigned to Square and Triangle, which, depending on which games you usually play, can also be a good alternative. After all, games like Nioh or Monster Hunter also use face buttons for heavy and light attacks as standard.

In the video, you will find out what to generally expect in the game. The impressions from colleague Fritz refer, however, to the PC version:

Gameplay

  • Automatic target focus switch: off

Explanation: With target focus, you mark the enemy you want to attack and are then – as the name suggests – focused on them. If you enable this option, the focus will switch to the next enemy once your current foe dies.

That might sound practical at first but can actually become quite bothersome or chaotic if the automatic switch does not pick the opponent you intended to attack. Or, for example, if you originally didn’t want to target anyone at all to create distance between you and the enemies. For newcomers who struggle with the mechanic in general, however, it can also be helpful to enable this option.

HUD

  • Character status HUD: always show

Explanation: How you handle this display is, of course, a matter of taste. We find it practical to have all information visible at all times and therefore keep the HUD constantly active. However, if you place a lot of value on immersion or want a “cleaner” screen in general, it is advisable to choose “automatic.”

We would definitely advise against “always hide,” unless you need a special additional challenge.

Language

  • Text (can only be changed on the title screen): German

Explanation: The game only features Chinese and English voiceovers but also offers German on-screen texts. According to recent information, you can easily use these in the PS5 version and they are displayed correctly, mostly even in the skill tree.

Our colleagues from GameStar, specifically from the video team, had the issue in their preview version of the game that some translations into German did not fit, leading to misinformation about certain abilities.

Display

  • Graphics mode: Performance mode

Explanation: Black Myth: Wukong offers three modes: Performance, Balanced, and Quality. Unsurprisingly, we recommend the one that prioritizes performance to get the best possible performance. In action-packed titles with high speed, this is usually the first choice, even if it means sacrificing graphical quality.

This has also been confirmed in our initial impressions of Black Myth so far. You will find out more about this soon in our dedicated article.

  • Motion blur: weak to off

Explanation: Motion blur can help compensate for small inconsistencies in the frame rate, resulting in a smoother gaming experience. However, it also does exactly what its name implies: the image becomes blurry in motion, which can cause discomfort and nausea for some people.

If that is the case for you, you should turn it off immediately; if you are not sensitive to this issue, you can try whether the “weak” setting suits you, depending on the chosen game mode. We would advise against the “strong” option in any case.

Explanation: We generally find camera shake disturbing, and this effect can also lead to similarly negative consequences for some people as motion blur. Therefore, we recommend turning it down completely.
