The multidisciplinary team of the neurosurgery sector at Maternidade Dona Evangelina Rosa successfully performed, this Saturday morning (15), an occipital encephalocele procedure in a newborn with less than 24 hours of life. Maternity is the only one in the state that performs this type of procedure.
The team responsible for the procedure consisted of the Coordinator of the Neurosurgery Service Prof. Dr. Ricardo Lopes, Coordinator of Neonatal Anesthesiology Prof. Dr. Carlos Gustavo, neurosurgery resident Dr. Marcos David and medical intern Illana Mauriz.

Encephalocele is a protrusion of nerve tissue and meninges caused by a defect in the skull, usually at the back. The problem occurs due to a defect in the occipital bone in the fourth week of embryogenesis.
