Healthy 14-Year-Old Boy Fights for His Life After Developing Severe Complications from the Flu
Mathias Uribe, a vibrant and healthy 14-year-old boy, had his life turned upside down when he developed flu-like symptoms in late June. Mathias, who was excitedly looking forward to his freshman year of high school, suddenly found himself battling a serious illness.
According to Mathias’ parents, Edgar and Catalina Uribe, their son displayed symptoms such as a high fever and rashes. Concerned, they took him to the doctor twice, but his condition continued to deteriorate. Eventually, Mathias was rushed to a local emergency room where he was diagnosed with pneumonia caused by a severe case of the flu. He became hypoxic, meaning his body was not receiving enough oxygen, and went into cardiac arrest.
Doctors were able to revive Mathias after six long minutes, but the road to recovery would prove to be an arduous one. He was transported to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt where he spent two weeks on life support, hooked up to an ECMO machine that supported his heart and lungs. Doctors were uncertain whether Mathias would survive and, if he did, what kind of brain function he would have.
Despite the dire situation, Mathias showed signs of improvement. His parents witnessed his first movements after a week in the intensive care unit. It was a breakthrough that brought hope and relief to their family.
However, further challenges awaited the Uribe family. The lack of blood flow to Mathias’ hands and legs had caused irreversible damage, resulting in the need for amputations. Mathias underwent 14 surgeries, including the amputation of both forearms below the elbow and one leg below the knee and one leg above the knee. The loss of his limbs was a devastating blow, especially considering Mathias’ passion for running cross-country and playing the piano.
Through it all, Mathias has shown incredible perseverance and strength. Despite the physical and emotional toll, he remains resilient. His parents have been by his side, supporting him in every step of his recovery. They have been open and honest with Mathias about his condition, reminding him to be grateful for being alive and assuring him that they will find a way to adapt and overcome.
Mathias’ strong spirit has touched the hearts of his medical team at the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Dr. Katie Boyle, a pediatrician who is part of Mathias’ medical team, praised his determination and emphasized that his case is incredibly rare, especially in an otherwise healthy teenager.
As Mathias continues to recover, his family and medical team remain hopeful that he will be able to return home in time for Christmas. He is currently in the intensive care unit, but he is expected to be discharged to a rehabilitation center soon. Prosthetics will be fitted to assist him in regaining his independence.
