“I will be present (…) and I asked that tribute be paid to all the French victims of this war in the Middle East,” Mathilde Panot said at a press conference this Tuesday.

In line with the plan to pay tribute to the French victims of the October 7 Hamas attacks announced by Emmanuel Macron during his river conference, the leader of the LFI deputies declared: “I believe that we must pay tribute (…) to the Franco-Israelis and the Franco-Palestinians who died, whether in war crimes committed by Hamas or in war crimes committed by Netanyahu.”

La France insoumise created controversy after the attacks of October 7, in particular by refusing to qualify Hamas as a “terrorist” group. Mathilde Panot was the subject of criticism when, at a press conference three days after the attacks, she described the Islamist group as “an armed branch which is today responsible for war crimes”.

Tribute on February 7

“On February 7, at the monument for the victims of terrorism” located on the Esplanade des Invalides in Paris, “I will pay tribute to these victims alongside their loved ones, their families and all those who want to join us there” , Emmanuel Macron said last week. The Head of State recalled that France had “lost 41 of its children” in these attacks.

The Hamas attack, of unprecedented violence and scale in the country’s history, led to the death of more than 1,140 people, the majority civilians, according to an AFP count based on data Israeli officials.

In response, Israel launched an air and ground offensive on the small territory, which left more than 25,000 dead, the vast majority of them women, children and adolescents, according to a latest report from the Hamas Ministry of Health.
