Chicago Bears Confirm Matt Eberflus Will Return as Head Coach; Make Changes to Coaching Staff

In an announcement made on Wednesday, the Chicago Bears confirmed that Matt Eberflus will be returning as the head coach for the upcoming season. However, the team also revealed that offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, WR coach/passing game coordinator Tyke Tolbert, running backs coach Omar Young, and assistant tight ends coach Tim Zetts have been fired.

Eberflus, who led the team to a 7-10 finish this season, has been at the helm for the past two years, each ending with the Bears finishing last in the NFC North. The team’s offense ranked 20th in the NFL with 323.2 yards per game, while the defense showed improvement towards the end of the season, winning three of their last five games.

The Bears have also made headlines with their valuable draft picks, carrying the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft as a result of a trade with the Carolina Panthers, as well as their own No. 9 pick in the upcoming draft.

Before joining the Bears, Eberflus spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, where he consistently led a top-10 run defense. He also has coaching experience with the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns, as well as a successful college coaching career at Toledo and Missouri.

The dismissal of Getsy and Janocko may signal a potential change at the quarterback position, with the Bears having the opportunity to evaluate top prospects in the upcoming draft. However, the team also acknowledges the strong support for current quarterback Justin Fields within the locker room.

Overall, the coaching changes and draft picks set the stage for an eventful offseason for the Bears as they aim to turn around their performance and make strides in the upcoming season.
