BOLZANO. “A heartfelt thanks to the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella for his important and clear position in the protection of linguistic minorities, as a constitutional principle”. This was stated on social media by the President of the Province of Bolzano Arno Kompatscher in reference to the words pronounced by the Head of State in Aosta during the eightieth anniversary of the Resistance, Liberation and Autonomy of the Aosta Valley.

“One was not – and is not – a stranger in one’s own home, whatever one’s own life was – and is culture, language, religion“, thus Mattarella. “The principle that the Constituent Assembly affirmed was explicit: languages spoken by Italian citizens rooted in its territory could not be considered foreign in Italy.

“It was the direct consequence of the fundamental principles of our Constitution. Article 3 makes this explicit. This is why enhancing the specific features of the communities located at the borders of Italy has enriched the values of coexistence of our civilization. This is a wealth and a source of pride for the Republic. A value, that of the lands and peoples of the border that the European Union has been able to grow and enhance, giving ever greater depth to our European culture”, added Mattarella.
