Mattel Unveils Serena Williams Barbie Honoring 2005 Australian Open Win

Mattel has unveiled a new Serena Williams Barbie Signature doll priced at $45, capturing the tennis icon’s lime-green and white outfit from her 2005 Australian Open victory. The launch arrives ahead of International Day of the Girl alongside a charitable donation to support Florida families.

Recreating the 2005 Australian Open Triumph

Mattel’s latest collectible honors the tennis legend’s mini-me with a design drawn directly from one of her most celebrated Grand Slam comebacks. The miniature figure sports the neon green and white mesh cutout top and crisp white skirt that Williams wore when she defeated Lindsay Davenport to claim her seventh Grand Slam singles title (as noted by Today). The match was a battle that ended 2–6, 6–3, 6–0, a victory Williams says taught her to never give up even when she was down in the finals.

The accessory set includes a matching sweatband, performance socks, and a miniature tennis racket and ball. The racket is from Wilson, a long-term equipment partner of the athlete. The official Barbie doll also features dangling silver earrings and curly blonde-highlighted hair that reflects the athlete’s appearance. Williams participated in the design process, noting she wanted the hair to be lighter than it was when she originally wore the outfit to include a modern element.

“It was really important for me to have the right skin tone. It was really important for me also for them to have the right hair.”

The 2005 tournament marked a triumphant return to the Grand Slam circuit after an abdominal injury sidelined her through the end of the previous year (according to USA Today). We’re here. I know that I’m out here and I know that I’m one of the best players out here.” Bustle noted that Williams praised the manufacturer’s attention to detail during the reveal.

“The outfit was very complicated. It had a lot of pieces to it, and [Mattel] nailed it all, the shoes and everything. I was really adamant about having big curly hair and having a little color in the hair as well.”

Alongside the retail launch, the Barbie Dream Gap Project is issuing a financial contribution to support Mrs. Rina’s House of Blessings, a nonprofit organization operating in Martin County, Florida.

“As we celebrate International Day of the Girl, Barbie is proud to honor Serena Williams. Barbie has always inspired girls to believe they can be anything, from the sports stadium to the fashion runway to the boardroom. Serena Williams embodies that message through her extraordinary achievements as an athlete, entrepreneur, and advocate for equality.”

Representation and Lessons for the Next Generation

For Williams, the collectible holds deep personal significance regarding childhood representation (according to Essence).

“Growing up, I didn’t see many girls who looked like me being told there was no limit to who they could become. I want every girl who plays with this doll to see possibility — not just in me, but in herself. She can dream big, work hard, change direction, break barriers, and become anything she chooses.”

Williams intends for the doll to serve as a tool for teaching life lessons. She told Bustle that the doll represents the idea that one should not give up, but instead start over and keep going. She shares this philosophy with her daughters, Olympia and Adira, whom she shares with husband Alexis Ohanian. Williams tells her children that while the world may doubt them, they must try to believe in themselves.

The release marks the athlete’s second Barbie of the year, following a one-of-a-kind Role Model doll released in March for International Women’s Day. That earlier doll was part of a global “Dream Teaminitiative featuring eight female changemakers who werefirsts” in their fields, highlighting Williams’ role as a woman of color to own a major venture capital fund. Today reported that her young daughters have already incorporated both collector pieces into their playtime activities, even dressing other dolls in the 2005 look.

Williams is not the only member of her family in the franchise; Venus Williams was honored in August 2025 as part of the Inspiring Women Series. The Venus Williams doll wears an outfit from the 2007 Wimbledon final, where she defeated Marion Bartoli in straight sets to claim her fourth title at the All England Club.

Beyond her 23 major singles titles and four Olympic gold medals, Williams continues to influence various sectors. While investing is her main focus as the year winds down, she continues to hit tennis balls to stay fit, though she remains undecided on ramping up training for another tournament.
