“We do not allow lying in the house. You cannot say the words ‘I can’t,’ and you can’t use the word ‘hate’,” McConaughey explained. He is quite strict with these rules and mentioned that his kids would be in a lot of trouble if they did any of that at home.
Interestingly, McConaughey revealed that he implemented his father’s parenting rules on his kids. He talked about his relationship with his father growing up and how that influenced the rules he now has for his own children. He recalled a story from his childhood when his father confronted him after he stole pizza. Although he lied in the moment, he later realized he had been wrong.
McConaughey’s goal is to raise his kids to be respectful and humble individuals. He and his wife want their children to become autonomous, conscientious, and competent young people. While he acknowledges that being a celebrity’s kid may come with privileges, he doesn’t want his children to take anything for granted.
“We don’t want our children, nor do we allow ourselves, to go, ‘Oh, well that’s where my value lies — in the amount of money I have in my bank account or the fact that I’m famous’,” he said.
In addition to teaching respect and humility, McConaughey also wants his kids to feel proud of their family’s accomplishments. Being a celebrity’s child can be challenging, as they are often viewed in the shadow of their parents. To counter this, McConaughey encourages his children to stand tall and be proud of who they are and who their parents are.
