I have been playing video games for as long as I can remember, passionate about technology and recently about e-commerce and streaming services. I am fortunate to be part of the Xataka Mexico team and I always dedicate my utmost effort in all the site’s publications. LinkedIn

Warner Bros. Discovery could no longer hold out. Max will increase its price in Mexico starting August 23, 2024. Through an email, subscribers on the Standard Plan with 50% discount began to be notified of the new prices they will have to pay starting next month.

New Max Price in Mexico

If you are one of the users who signed up for Max during the first month of HBO Max and have kept that subscription active, you will have to pay more.

New Price

Standard Plan 1 month with 50% lifetime discount

89.50 pesos

99.50 pesos

Let’s remember that there are two types of Standard plans in Mexico, one that was signed during the launch of Max in Mexico and the one that comes from HBO Max with a 50% discount. Here are their differences:

Max Standard Plan

  • Two devices simultaneously.
  • Full HD resolution.
  • Up to 30 downloadable contents available for offline viewing.

Max Standard Plan with 50% Discount

  • Three devices simultaneously.
  • Resolution up to 4K.
  • Up to 30 downloadable contents available for offline viewing.

The company clarified that people who have the discount will have that plan for a limited time. There is no date for transitioning to the current plan. They clarified that to maintain the “lifetime” discount, it is necessary to comply with the terms and conditions.

“If at any time you cancel your subscription, change your subscription plan, or if you stop maintaining a valid payment method, you will lose the benefit of this promotional offer. Trial periods will not be available in connection with this offer.”

Currently, we have not been able to confirm if the increase will affect all subscribers. Researching online, we noticed another small increase in the Standard Plan, but annual.

STANDARD PLAN 12 MONTHS

1,779 pesos

1,788 pesos

What we can note in these two increases is that the increase does not exceed 10 pesos. We had the opportunity to contact the Max help center, and they mentioned that the increase will only be reflected with users coming from HBO Max:

This increase will only apply to customers migrated from HBO Max who maintained the previous prices after the transition to Max.

This information cannot be considered official at this time. At Xataka Mexico, we contacted Max’s agency in Mexico to find out if the only affected users with the increase will be those coming from HBO Max. In case we receive any response, we will share it.

Max Price Increase in Mexico: What This Means for Subscribers

As Warner Bros. Discovery announces a price increase for its Max streaming service in Mexico, effective August 23, 2024, many subscribers are left to ponder the implications of this change. The shift comes as part of a broader trend affecting streaming platforms worldwide, where the balance between content offerings and subscription costs is constantly reevaluated.

Understanding the Price Changes

The email notifications sent to current subscribers detail the adjustments for the Standard Plan with a 50% lifetime discount. Users who began their subscriptions during the launch of HBO Max will see their monthly fees rise from 89.50 pesos to 99.50 pesos. Similarly, the annual plan is also seeing a minor increase, from 1,779 pesos to 1,788 pesos.

Impact on Subscription Tiers

Max offers two distinct Standard Plans: one with a discount and one without. The discounted tier allows for three simultaneous streams and 4K resolution, while the standard plan allows for two streams in Full HD. This differentiation could further intensify the competition among streaming services to provide enhanced value to subscribers.

Subscriber Retention Challenges

With rising costs, retaining subscribers will be crucial for Max. The company emphasized that maintaining the promotional discount is contingent upon compliance with specific terms and conditions. If users cancel their subscriptions or modify their plans, they risk losing the discount, which raises questions about long-term subscriber loyalty.

Market Trends to Watch

The relatively small increase of less than 10 pesos hints at a careful approach to price adjustments, likely influenced by competitive pressures. As more streaming services emerge and existing platforms scramble for subscriber loyalty, understanding user willingness to pay will be vital. While incremental increases may be manageable for subscribers now, significant adjustments in the future may provoke greater backlash.

Broader Implications for Streaming Services

Experts predict this trend of gradual price increases will extend beyond Max, affecting various streaming platforms. As the market matures, companies may find it hard to maintain expansive content libraries without adjusting their pricing structures. How these platforms communicate changes and the value they provide will ultimately determine their market position.
