We have reached the conclusion of what can now be defined as the “X Trilogy”: this week, “MaXXXine” was released in Italian theaters, the third chapter of the saga directed by Ti West, which began with “X – A Sexy Horror Story” and continued with “Pearl”, the prequel to the first film.

The protagonist is as Always Mia Goth, here in the role of Maxine, an established actress in the world of hard cinema, but with decidedly different ambitions. In fact, she would like to become a big star and the opportunity presents itself thanks to the production of a horror film where she will be the main actress. However, things go badly because of a serial killer and a detective who threaten her, for different reasons.

Set in the mid-1980s, “MaXXXine” is a film deeply tied to the period it has chosen to deal with: it is no coincidence that we are halfway through a decade in which the pornography industry, and the cinema industry in general, are undergoing a huge change.

Director Ti West tells all the cruelty of Hollywood, the shadows rather than the lights of the Mecca of Cinema, always placing a strong emphasis on the period described, also and above all for the formal choices staged.

From the photography to the soundtrack, passing through cult objects of those years (including VHS), “MaXXXine” is yet another revival film of the 80s, a decade that continues to obsess and enthuse many directors today.
