The Government of Canada has declared May 18 as the Tamil Genocide Day in protest of the killing of Tamils in the Sri Lankan Civil War.
In 2009 there was a civil war between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the government of Sri Lanka over the demand for a separate Eelam. Tamils in Sri Lanka were killed by the Sri Lankan army in this war. The civil war ended on May 18 following the assassination of LTTE leader Prabhakaran by the Sri Lankan military.

In this context, the Government of Canada has announced that May 18 will be observed as the day of remembrance for the massacre of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Canadian Member of Parliament Hari Ananda Sankara introduced the resolution. The resolution was subsequently passed by the Canadian Parliament.
Canada is the first country to recognize the genocide in Sri Lanka. Tamil Eelam supporters have welcomed the decision of the Government of Canada.

Leader of the Tamil National Front Fruit for the announcement of the Government of Canada. Nedumaran welcomed. In his statement, he said he hoped the resolution would open the eyes of the world community and help other countries to follow in the footsteps of Canada and prevent the Eelam Tamil tragedy.
