BOLZANO. To underline the importance of the dignity of work, on the 1st of May the diocesan commission for social and labor problems invited a celebration presided over by the bishop Ivo Muser in the cathedral in Bolzano.
The bishop recalled that “work not only has a price but it is a value, expression of man and woman in their entirety and dignity as persons. May solidarity and subsidiarity remain the guiding ideas for an economy that provides its important contribution to the development of society.” This area, Muser underlined, also includes “fair working and wage conditions and equal pay between women and men.”
In his homily, Monsignor Muser then invited us to think critically “towards a mentality that allows itself to be guided by merciless pressure: the laws of the market, of profitability, of efficiency, of increased profits, which are legitimate, cannot be the only criteria and above all they cannot become independent or absolute. Capital must be at the service of people and not vice versa.”
In the celebration dedicated to those who work, even on a voluntary basis, the bishop expressed his closeness “to all the people committed to a dignified future of their work and their business, who are the support of families and the social promotion of our territory.”
Addressing political leaders, Muser said he trusts “that municipal, provincial and state institutions will take to heart the requests of those who strive every day to make our community alive. By joining forces in teamwork, a lot can be done for the common good: to preserve economic and work activities and to create new opportunities, capable of promoting increasingly sustainable and less precarious work, especially for our young people. ”
