The Maggio Orchestra will not play tonight. No last reply of Traviata, no Placido Domingo? No, the Theater still wants to proceed, even if only with singers and piano. Superintendent Alexander Pereira has no intention of showing the side to the unions and canceling the play: «Traviata is done and will be directed by Zubin Mehta with Maestro Severi at the piano. The two of them alone, with the singers and the choir if necessary – comments the number one of the Maggio – After all, Riccardo Muti at La Scala has already done it once. And if by chance enough musicians show up … we’ll see. But I’m quite skeptical ».
After the attempts at interviews with the management on Saturday and Monday, the orchestra professors affiliated with the Fials union – which at the end of last week had called for two days of strike, for 5 and 7 October – they decided in the assembly to confirm the mobilization at least for today’s Traviata. “The strike remains confirmed – announces the secretary Fials Enrico Sciarra – We wanted guarantees on the malfunctioning of the work system and serious internal organization problems, and the guarantees received were not considered sufficient to revoke it”. The strike was overwhelmingly confirmed by the Fials assembly: 40 voted in favor, 3 against, 7 abstentions. “If there are no news by tomorrow – concludes Sciarra – even the 7th for the concert of Maestro Mehta will be like this”.
But on the part of the management they see it differently. Is another arm wrestling beginning? Pereira replies: «I had found an agreement with Sciarra, even if we talked almost only about the trip to Dubai. The other topics we will analyze in the future. And he also agreed with me in withdrawing the strike, but his members obviously didn’t. I think they have an internal struggle of their own. This whole case is a huge whipped cream, second, but now we live in it … in the cream ».
