The mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Alvarez, believes that the investigation carried out by the Attorney General’s Office, called the “Triple A” case, is a political persecution against him.

There is no problem, we are moving forward, I honestly don’t pay attention to the issue, when one is calm, one can walk through the streets, the only thing I want is for there to be objective justice, I am sure that it will be, technical, transparent, we are focused on administering Guayaquil, that is a private matter.”

These were the words of Aquiles Alvarez, before entering the solemn session held by the National Assembly for the founding celebrations of the city of Guayaquil.

It was based on a complaint that the Attorney General’s Office initiated the investigation of this case, an alleged crime of illegal fuel trade, which involves Alquiles Alvarez, his brothers and his family company COPEDESA, which has a network of gas stations, and other individuals and legal entities.

Aquiles mentioned that the raids carried out on Tuesday, July 23 were unnecessary, because if they had asked him for information he would have provided it without any problem.

The mayor regrets that these events took place on the eve of the city’s festivities. For this reason, he insists that it is a political persecution against him.

He also mentioned that the idea would be to discredit RC (Citizens’ Revolution), the political party with which he won the Mayor’s Office. “Do you think it is normal that they put the RC flame on a logo (of the case)? Everything has been planned like this, but they are not going to intimidate us, we are in a good position,” he added.

Alvarez also indicated that he will not be a presidential candidate for the 2025 elections and that what interests him is ‘getting Guayaquil on the right track to emerge from underdevelopment.’
