A comprehensive plan for bolstering CardonaS infrastructure and community well-being is underway, as municipal leaders convened on Thursday to address key areas including sports, public health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare. The collaborative effort signals a renewed commitment to integrated development within the Uruguayan municipality.

Expanding Access to sports and Recreation

The day’s meetings, held at the Cardona municipality, saw Mayor Gabriel Bentancur receive Director of the Sports Secretariat, Prof. Fabian Eugui, to discuss a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing athletic opportunities and improving sports facilities. A key component of the plan is an expanded program of activities-offered both in the morning and evening-that will encompass hydrogymnastics, midwifery classes, Latin rhythms, and neighborhood-based recreation. These programs will utilize spaces such as Parque Cazeaux and Mi Placita, maximizing accessibility for residents. According to a senior official, the club Unión pool is slated to reopen in early December following essential painting, cleaning, and maintenance work.

Supporting Athletes and Investing in Infrastructure

Prof. Eugui also met with Cardón athlete Kevin Machado, a promising javelin thrower with national and international potential. The conversation focused on evaluating Machado’s training regimen, current support systems, and future prospects.Eugui emphasized the critical need for sustained technical and institutional backing for high-performance athletes, pledging to collaborate with the Athletic Confederation of Uruguay (CAU) and the Uruguayan Olympic Committee to enhance training conditions and equipment access.

“It is necessary to reduce the economic gaps that today force athletes to finance their equipment through raffles or sales,” a spokesperson for the Sports Secretariat stated, highlighting the need for coordinated funding initiatives at both the departmental and national levels to ensure equitable opportunities for all athletes representing Uruguay.

Further demonstrating a commitment to sports development, Eugui received representatives from the Cardona Hockey group, who presented a proposal for a new synthetic grass field.the project aligns with a broader vision of territorial development, aiming to concentrate various sports disciplines-including hockey and children’s soccer-in the western area of the city, creating a shared recreational hub. The Municipality has indicated a willingness to include funding for the project in the next departmental budget, recognizing its potential to promote inclusion, women’s sports, and community engagement.

Public Health initiatives: Free Castration Program & Environmental Awareness

Alongside sports initiatives, Director of Hygiene and Bromatology, Diego Maneiro, oversaw the progress of a free castration program for animals, developed in partnership with the Cero Callejeros collective and the National Institute of Animal Welfare (INBA).During a visit to the Route 2 area, Maneiro announced the distribution of 300 microchips for registering animals undergoing the procedure as part of the program’s initial phase. A second phase, involving 650 additional interventions, is planned for mid-December, with the voluntary participation of local veterinarians.

“The objective is that each person can access the castration of their pet for free, choosing their trusted veterinarian, as long as they are attached to the project,” Maneiro explained. “We seek to consolidate a public policy of responsible control and animal welfare throughout the department.”

Maneiro also engaged in discussions with Mayor Bentancur regarding waste collection, recycling, and environmental education, reinforcing the ongoing collaboration between their departments to foster greater citizen awareness regarding environmental stewardship.
