On the 1st, exactly 2 years after the inauguration of the 8th elected Yeosu Mayor Jeong Ki-myeong, Mayor Jeong held the ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance Future Vision Declaration Ceremony’ at the City Hall Cultural Hall.

On this day, Mayor Jeong personally took the microphone and explained the blueprint and future vision of the ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance Project’, officially declaring it domestically and internationally, and signaling the full-scale start of the ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance Mid- to Long-Term Comprehensive Development Plan’, which is his main campaign promise.

According to the poem, Yeosu Bay is made up of five bays: Yeosu Bay, Jangsu Bay, Gamak Bay, Yeosu Hae Bay, and Gwangyang Bay. Yeosu Bay completely surrounds Yeosu and is shaped like a butterfly.

The ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance Mid- to Long-term Comprehensive Development Plan’ is a project for the 100-year development of Yeosu that aims to prevent overdevelopment concentrated in some parts of Yeosu Bay and to develop the entire bay in a balanced manner according to the characteristics of each of the five bays that make up Yeosu Bay. It is being implemented with the goal of creating a vision of ‘Yeosu, a future marine city where islands and the sea coexist.’

Through this large-scale project, the city plans to secure fishery and tourism resources, respond quickly to changes in the marine ecosystem, and transform Yeosu’s sea into a giant garden.

The plan contains a total of 23 strategic projects and 61 business tasks, including the preservation and development of Yeosu Bay.

Earlier, Mayor Jeong declared during his candidacy that he would “realize the ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance’ by making it a citizens’ sea garden, a marine and tourism resource, a mecca for marine sports, and a treasure trove of fishery resources,” and “make Yeosu Bay the most beautiful and pleasant sea garden in the world.”

After taking office, after about a year of preparation and review, the ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance Mid- to Long-term Comprehensive Development Plan Establishment Research Service’ was launched in August of last year, taking the first step toward fostering Yeosu Bay as a core content of the southern coastal tourism belt.

The service includes specific detailed implementation plans focusing on the regeneration and sustainable development of Yeosu Bay, systematic management plans for future generations, and improvement of living conditions for citizens.

Afterwards, we conducted a citizen survey, held a Yeosu Bay Renaissance contest, operated a citizen participation research group, and held various reporting meetings, and held the final reporting meeting for the implementation of the ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance Project’ at the end of June this year.

Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong of Yeosu City said, “The Yeosu Bay Renaissance Project will be the cornerstone of a new 100-year plan for Yeosu,” and emphasized, “Through this, let’s preserve Yeosu’s natural environment, achieve sustainable development, and give a better Yeosu to future generations.”

Expectations are already high as to whether the ambitious ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance Project’ proposed by Mayor Jeong will be able to achieve balanced development of the Nabi Peninsula and a new revival of Yeosu.

Meanwhile, the second part of the special report, “Yeosu Bay Centennial Plan: Talking about the ‘Yeosu Bay Renaissance’” is titled “Previewing Yeosu Bay: Dreaming of the Sea Garden of the Gods” and gives a sneak peek into the changing future of Yeosu Bay.
