Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong of Yeosu visited the Ministry of Strategy and Finance and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 23rd to secure a preemptive national budget amid the government’s continued fiscal austerity measures.

According to the city, on this day, Mayor Jeong met with the Ministry of Strategy and Finance’s Social Budget Deliberation Director Cho Yong-beom, Economic Budget Deliberation Director Kang Yun-jin, Welfare and Safety Budget Deliberation Director Oh Sang-woo, and Administrative and Defense Budget Deliberation Director Jeong Deok-yeong to deliver information on local issues and explain the feasibility of the project.

The main proposed projects are ▲Holding of international events for the 2026 Yeosu World Expo ▲Opening of access roads to the Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex ▲Introduction of large-capacity blasting system in the Honam region ▲Construction of the Yeosu Hwa-tae~Baek-ya Road ▲Installation of sewage treatment facilities in Jangchon and Jukchon villages in Samsan-myeon ▲Gwangyang (Ⅳ) industrial water supply project ▲Establishment of a digital-based resource circulation model industrial complex, etc.

In particular, as the island expo is approaching, he emphasized the urgency and requested 5.54 billion won in national funds, suggesting that the full amount be reflected so that the project can proceed in a timely manner.

In addition, the ‘Hwa-tae~Baek-ya Road Construction Project’ and the ‘Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex Access Road Opening’ projects are large-scale SOC projects closely related to the island expo, and it was conveyed that budget support is essential for early or temporary opening in line with the opening period.

Afterwards, he visited the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and met with Han Soon-ki, Director of the Local Finance and Economy Bureau, and Jin Seon-ju, Director of the Local Tax Division, to explain the difficult reality of local finances due to a decrease in local tax allocations and self-tax revenues, and emphasized the need for national support to successfully host the island expo.

The proposed special grant projects include ▲Expansion of the access road to the main event hall of the Island Expo and environmental improvement projects ▲Installation of smart lighting around the main and subsidiary event halls of the Island Expo ▲Development of theme tourism resources at the subsidiary event halls of the islands, etc.

Among them, it was emphasized that this project was absolutely necessary for promoting the event as the access road to Dolsan Jinmoji District, the main venue of the island expo, is narrow.

Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong of Yeosu City said, “Next year is the golden time as the detailed implementation plan for the island expo will be fully implemented,” and added, “We will continue to visit central government agencies and focus all our capabilities on securing national funding so that the will and legitimacy of our city’s project can be sufficiently conveyed.”
