Mayor of Paris will run for president

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, representing the Socialist Party, has announced plans to run for president in elections in 2022. This 62-year-old Ms Hidalgo said during a speech in the city of Rouen in the north-west of the country.

“In these difficult times, in order to instill hope in our lives, I decided to become a candidate for the presidency of France,” Ann Hidalgo announced (quoted by Reuters). Ms Hidalgo became the first woman to lead the French capital in 2014.

Former Minister of Economy of France Arnaud Montebourg has already announced his intention to participate in the upcoming elections. Leader of the National Association Marine Le Pen, head of the regional council of Haute-de-France Xavier Bertrand, head of the Ile-de-France metropolitan area Valerie Pécresse and former EU chief negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier are also going to enter the election race.

A public opinion poll commissioned by Le Parisien and France info agency showed that only two politicians will be able to compete for the presidency in 2022 – the current head of state Emmanuel Macron and Mrs. Le Pen.
