Julio Daniel Marroquín wants to leave the Municipality of Villa Canales after two consecutive terms, to occupy one of the 160 seats in the Congress of the Republic for the period 2024-2028.
According to the resolution of the Registry of Citizens of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), he has the endorsement to head the list of candidates for the Department of Guatemala.
Marroquín, who adds more than 20 complaints in the Public Ministry Presented mostly by former employees of the commune, it seeks to place the municipality in the hands of former mayor Erick Pocasangre, whose payroll includes Reina Elizabeth Rodríguez, secretary and one of the mayor’s most trusted people.
On March 19, 2021, Marroquín was in the news when he received the vaccine against Covid-19 together with his municipal council when only front-line personnel were supposed to receive it.
This caused the authorities of the Ministry of Health to take action against the mayor for not complying with the criteria established by the governing body for health.
“If it is verified that Marroquín’s vaccination was irregular, actions will be taken against those responsible,” the authorities said on that occasion, but the case did not prosper.
The mayor chief registers income that reaches Q54 thousand per month. According to a publication by ojoconmipisto, in the first six months of 2022 the commune paid Q1.8 million for per diems.
Some complaints
During his first term as mayor, he was denounced for an anomalous authorization of a construction license. And although the mayor no longer enjoyed immunity, the complaint made no progress.
On August 18, 2021, the Electoral Crimes Prosecutor requested the withdrawal of immunity for illegal electoral propaganda, because two years before the complaint was received where it was stated that Marroquín was promoting works that he carried out as a “public official, possibly abusing his power with the purpose of re-election,” the MP said on that occasion.
The Prosecutor’s Office against Electoral Crimes requested the withdrawal of pretrial proceedings against two municipal mayors.
